Wedge suspensions are essential for ride
control three-piece bogies. This type of suspension uses a wedge-shaped
mechanism that varies friction to dampen vibrations. It consists of several
parts: a side frame column wear plate, a combined wedge, an inclined wear
plate, and double stiffness damping springs. Vibration energy is decreased
through the friction created between the wedge and the side frames wear plate.
Research shows that a well-designed wedge with the optimal angle significantly reduces vertical acceleration and the friction between the wheels and the rails. This optimization also minimizes deviations during loaded and empty runs. Railway freight cars that utilize wedges with the ideal inclination experience marked improvements in stability, hunting speed, and lower derailment risks.
