The slack adjuster, often referred to as an automatic brake shoe clearance regulator, plays a crucial role in a truck's braking system. It ensures that when brake shoes wear out and the gap between the brake shoe and wheel thread increases, the slack adjuster automatically reduces this gap, bringing it back to the normal level. Conversely, when new brake shoes are installed, the gap decreases, and the slack adjuster will extend on its own to maintain the clearance within the normal limits. This process helps keep the piston stroke of the brake cylinder at the required level.
Currently, the two popular slack adjusters used for freight cars in China are the ST1-600 and ST2-250, both of which operate by using levers. The key distinction lies in their screw extension lengths: the ST1-600 has an extension of 600 mm, whereas the ST2-250 offers an extension of 250 mm. Typically, the ST1-600 slack adjuster is mounted on the upper pull rod of the original vehicle, while the ST2-250 is installed on the middle pull rod. Both types feature a two-way adjustment capability and utilize a non-self-locking threaded mechanical system. They are known for their reliable performance, compact design, quick action, and lack of interference with air brakes.
