The Mechanical Derailment Detector uses a mechanical system that quickly links the main brake air pipe to the outside air when a vehicle goes off track. This action triggers emergency braking for the train, which helps reduce damage and loss from the derailment. To install the derailment detector, two additional branches are added to the main air pipe of the existing air braking system, ensuring that the original braking performance stays the same.
The device for detecting mechanical derailments is primarily made up of an automatic broken valve, branch pipes, a tee for the branch pipe, a ball valve, and a tee for the main pipe. At its Core is the automatic broken valve, which includes several components such as the valve body, brake valve rod, pull ring, top beam, adjusting rod, acting rod, lock nut, and shrapnel.
If a railway freight wagon derails for any reason, the position of the wheel and axle will shift. This shift may cause the pull ring or the top beam of the derailment auto broken valve to come into contact with the axle, resulting in a force that travels through the adjusting rod and acting rod to the brake valve rod. The brake valve rod, designed with a thin wall, is prone to breaking under such pressure. Should the brake valve rod snap, it will create an open channel to the atmosphere in the brake system, triggering an immediate emergency brake application. In cases where the freight wagon is empty, the axle from the derailed wheel set can break the brake valve rod. Conversely, when a loaded freight wagon derails, it is the axle of the derailed bogie, which lacks a derailed wheel set, that causes the brake valve rod to break.
