The automatic coupler known as CA-3 serves as the primary connector for locomotives, coaches, and freight wagons on railways in the former Soviet Union. It is established as the standard type of coupler. Capable of pulling loads exceeding 8,000 tons even in adverse weather, the CA-3 is designed to be a reliable option.
This specific coupler is categorized as a non-rigid automatic type and consists of several components including the coupler body, lock, pawl, lock stop, lift, lift shaft, bolt, nut, and washer among others. The CA-3 operates in three distinct states: free, coupling interlock, and uncoupling.
Not only is the CA-3 coupler designed efficiently, but it also boasts high structural integrity. The essential parts are crafted from TB/T2942-E grade steel, ensuring durability. It allows for easy connection and effective coupler performance. When two CA-3 couplers are in their free state, they easily link up upon contact. A unique 'push' position facilitates shunting tasks, and a 10 mm gap between the connecting profiles indicates its tight coupling structure. This design minimizes coupling clearance, which helps reduce the train's longitudinal impact and enhances overall dynamic capability.
Currently, the CA-3 automatic coupler is utilized primarily in countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Finland, Iraq, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Australia, and Slovakia.
